Cabo de Sol (Desert Course)- hole 14 approachCabo de Sol (Desert Course)- hole 14 approach

Cabo del Sol is an outstanding golf and real estate development on the Baja Peninsula.

It all started with the Ocean Course designed by Jack Nicklaus and which opened in 1994 to much acclaim world wide.

However that course was re engineered when key coastal holes made way for further high end residential development.

In 2023 new inland holes were added by architects Nicklaus Design to replace the holes lost, and the Ocean Course was renamed The Cove.

It is a members only course now.

The Desert course was designed by Tom Weiskopf and opened for play in 2001.

In 2023 new holes were added by architects Fry & Straka to replace the 5 holes lost to the Ocean Course

The Desert Course was designed with ocean views on every hole, although the course itself never touches the coastline as the Ocean course does.

But it is a quality layout and just a little more forgiving than the Ocean course (Cove), with wider fairways and less penal bunkering.

It is an excellent test of golf.

The combination of ocean views, desert terrain and mountain backdrop, with little development around the course gives a lovely rustic feel.

But it is a seriously challenging championship standard course.

And is open to the general public..

Notable holes include:

- the challenging par 3 first hole opens the round with a long carry over sand to a nicely bunkered green

- the pretty short par 4 sixth hole with water and sand in play: a hole you will want to play over..

- the longer par 3 seventh hole, an all water carry to a well bunkered green with rocks also very much in play!

 - the short par 4 ninth hole is a work of art, with bunkers and rocks in the fairway, and a compelling background of palm trees, rocky mountains, blue sky and sea..

The Desert course is a worthy sister to the Ocean Course, and one of the better courses on the Baja Peninsula.

The course can be challenging, but off the appropriate tee is endlessly interesting and a joy to play.

The trade off between playability and dramatic use of the landscape suggests good architecture.

Recommended!
