Avondale Golf Club

Nestled in the sleepy Northern Sydney suburb of Pymble, Avondale Golf Club is a virtual golfing oasis in a jungle of sub tropical forest (albeit in a temperate zone).

You would not know you were deep in suburbia such is the thickness of the gorgeous vegetation the course traverses through.

In 2001 Avondale became the first club in New South Wales to become Audubon certified .

It is a golf course for nature lovers!

Avondale was constructed in 1926 and is routed through the natural bush.

It was designed by Eric Apperly, and has since been updated by Ross Watson and Craig Parry

The fairways were built along sand stone ridges and, in places, spanned gullies where dense bush awaits the wayward shot.

The  bushland setting attracts a diverse range of native animals and birdlife.

It is steeply undulating in places, and it is these ups and down that produce the most dramatic of holes.

Playing Avondale is akin to playing golf in a vast botanical garden, with magnificent strands of eucalyptus softened by ferns, rocks, the occasional water course, and most importantly some spectacular splash bunkering.

Avondale is one of the prettiest courses you will ever play.

It is also a good test of golf, requiring accuracy rather than length, and is a thinking golfer’s course.

Mind you, a bit of extra length judicially used can prove very useful on the risk/reward holes (such as the 17th hole..)

Notable holes include:

Hole 8- a spectacular uphill par 3 to a green surrounded in bunkers

Hole 9- a short up hill dogleg par 5. The approach to the green is memorable with clusters of bunkers to carry, and more around the green itself.

Hole 10- a magnificent short par 4 requiring a precise tee shot to set up an exciting short iron approach over a valley to a green set well below you in a very picturesque, well bunkered valley

And Avondale even has a spare hole (11A). Needless to say it is a lovely hole!

I thought Avondale  was very impressive.

It is now a personal favourite.
