Country Club of North Carolina (CCNC) is a private members club located in the Sandhills of North Carolina near Pinehurst.
The club boasts two 18 holes golf courses- the Dogwood, and The Cardinal courses, as well as tennis courts and pool- all in a glorious lakeside setting....
Cardinal course
The lesser known course at CCNC is called 'Cardinal', and has 9 holes designed by Willard Byrd in 1970, and nine holes by Robert Trent Jones Senior in 1981.
When the two nines were joined Byrd's nine became holes 1-5 and 15-18...
As a general statement the Willard Byrd holes have more involvement with the lake, and are more forgiving off the tee with wider landing areas.
RTJ holes are more inland and are tighter and perhaps more strategic.
At that stage in 1981 RTJ was also asked to renovate Dogwood, as well as the Byrd nine on Cardinal.
Arthur Hills undertook further renovations in 1999, and at the time of writing the back nine of Dogwood was being rejuvenated by Chris Spence.

Both courses are a joy to play.
The fairways are immaculate and the putting surfaces as pure as the driven snow- and quick! It takes some getting used to..
You will need to bring your 'A' game to play here, and on the holes where the lake is in play- and there are many- staying dry becomes a major focus.
The Cardinal course is well designed and will challenge all level of golfer
Notable holes include:
- hole 1, a driveable short par 4
- hole 2, lovely par 5 where the approach needs to be accurate to avoid the lake beyond

- hole 3, a challenging par 3 over water
- hole 4 is another challenging hole- a par 4 with a diagonal approach over water.

- hole 18, a par 4 with water in play along the left

CCNC is a haven for golfers.
Although the club is very private, with the right connections Travelling Golfers may gain access.
The club has quality 4 bedroom homes on site which are available at reasonable prices.
It makes a great base for a golfing trip in the Sandhills.
With two wonderful courses CCNC members must be pinching themselves!
