Manly Golf Clubhouse
I led a group of 12 seasoned golfers who landed at Manly Golf Club after playing some of the better courses in Sydney’s northern suburbs for the week.
A good time was had by all.
It was interesting how an experienced group of raters like this viewed the different courses.
At Manly the par 71 course is only 5885 metres off the back markers, and we played off the white competition tees at 5593.
So how do you compare that to some other courses which were both longer and played long?
Manly is very much a parkland course, with fairways winding through mature stands of trees.
The land is predominantly flat, and there are no sea views.
It’s a relatively short course.
But we thought it was terrific, and 'a course members would cherish'.
It is not championship length, but longer hitters are constrained by a combination of bunkers, vegetation, and water crossing fairways at a length that will make them throttle down and play a longer second.
The green complexes and surrounding bunkers also impressed.
They looked good, without being too flashy.
Nice, but moderately shaped greens are stoutly defended by well placed, attractive bunkering
So to summarise:
Manly GC is a private club with a bit of class.
The course is shortish, but a really good test of golf.
The whole course is beautifully maintained.
If you play well you will be rewarded, but you will constantly need to make the right decisions as to length and line, and then be able to execute.
Length alone will not suffice!
Notable holes include:
- Hole 2, a par 5 which intimidates with water crossing the fairway at a reachable distance..
- Hole 3, another teasing par 5 where distance control is at a premium
- Hole 4, an attractive, but testing mid length par 3
- Hole 8, a short par 4 with a long water carry off the tee
- Hole 13, a short par 4 requiring an accurate tee shot out of the trees
- Hole 16, a dogleg par 4 which requires a fade off the tee or a tee shot short to the corner
Manly is an easy walk.
At times it is like golfing in a botanical garden.
It is a course to play over..
